The Zeta Psi Fraternity at the University of Maryland is hosting its inaugural tug-of-war tournament called the "Pull for Matthew." The event is a double-elimination tournament with a mens, womens, and co-ed division. All proceeds will go to Matthew Alcorn, who in in 2006 was diagnosed with a Hypothalamic Hamartoma, an extremely rare brain tumor. The tumor was found after Matthew began having numerous gelastic seizures which caused him to laugh uncontrollably. Shortly after this diagnosis, he underwent brain surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. His first surgery was a preliminary temporary treatment to ease the original signs of his condition. After much follow up, he underwent an additional surgery removing more residual tumor. He required a third surgery to place a shunt in his skull to drain fluid alleviating cranial pressure. In February 2010, Matthew underwent a fourth brain surgery to remove even more of the tumor. This was done because he was having up to 300 seizures a day. These were uncontrolled by medications and his quality of life was affected in just about every way imaginable.
His surgeries are not over yet. During this last one, the doctors saw a tumor in a part of the brain that they cannot reach with scalpels. It is uncertain what the next step will be.
