    Horticultural Therapy:

This monthly program is offered free of charge (thanks to a Pepsi grant) to all affected by cancer...survivors, caregivers, family, and friends. A certified horticultural therapist, who is a cancer survivor herself, leads these wonderful 1 ½ hour programs with topics such as: "Twists & Turns", "Tea for Me", "Thanks a Lot", and "Winter Wonderland". Each participant makes a wonderful take-home project as well as plants and/or cuttings to nurture.

    SUNCOAST, FL:

    LIVESTRONG at the YMCA:

The program revolves around a caring and encouraging team of staff members who are interested in listening and helping in an individualized way. Our focus is on overall wellness. We provide personalized consultations to assess goals, interests and limitations, and offer a variety of exercise options to help with the development of endurance, strength and flexibility. We also enjoy social gathering and a monthly coffee hour.

There are two key programs specifically developed for community Cancer Survivors.

Basic Strength & Flexibility is a twelve-week progressive course that meets twice weekly. BSF was created specifically for individuals involved in, or recovering from, cancer treatment. Each twelve-week session is limited to five participants. Anyone affected by cancer is encouraged to join.

Cardio, Strength & Stretching for Survivors is an ongoing group exercise class designed for anyone affected by cancer. CSS for Survivors is a 60-minute class that encompasses low-impact cardio, light weight training and mat exercises for balance, coordination, and stretching. The format of the class is encouraging and non-competitive which allows us as a group to try new things. This past year we have tried both yoga and Pilates, and have cycling on the schedule next. The opportunities for this group are endless! Come and join us any Tuesday evening at 4:45 p.m.

Some of the goals for our classes include:

    • Creating personal goals
    • Increasing muscular strength and range of motion
    • Improving energy levels and self-esteem
    • Providing support and encouragement within the group

For those individuals affected by cancer not interested in taking a group exercise class we do offer individualized Wellness Consultations to provide exercise programs for patients and survivors at various stages of treatment or recovery. Our trained staff members will take the time to understand the goals and objectives of these individuals.
