National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship: African American Priorities

In 2002, we joined forces with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to lead a public health effort to address the issues faced by the growing number of cancer survivors.

Our collaboration, A National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship: Advancing Public Health Strategies, charts a course for the public health community to more effectively and comprehensively address cancer survivorship with the goal of improving the quality of life for survivors.

Your organization can help by using the National Action Plan to select and develop activities to address survivorship needs across physical, emotional and practical topics.

In 2006, 2 addendums were added to the National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship:

A National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship: African American Priorities
A National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship: Native American Priorities

Stakeholders in each community participated in prioritizing the needs and topics contained in the original action plan and provided comments on each topic area.  The resulting addendums provide a framework for actively addressing the needs of these diverse groups of cancer survivors.

State agencies, organizations and individuals can use the identified priorities to increase awareness among the general public, policy makers, researchers, advocates, survivors and others of the needs of Native American and African American cancer survivors and to stimulate organizations to take direct and focused action to meet those needs.
