We fight to improve the lives of people affected by cancer
As many of you know during the summer of 2011, my son-in-law, Russ Owen was diagnosed with Stage IV Testicular Cancer. And in November 2013, a dear friend, Fred Marty, succumbed to this terrible disease. To honor Russ and in Fred's memory, I've joined with others to raise money for the LIVESTRONG Foundation. We all know or have family and friends (or even you may have had to endure it) who have suffered through the mental and physical trauma caused by Cancer. Russ made me aware of the many services the Foundation does to help people through this trauma. You know, I had originally used many of the suggested words from the Foundation here but I really need to relate my experience in Austin last year. I went to Austin with Russ for the ride. I saw so many survivors, some two and even three times over. Some were still afflicted. But the theme was common. Everyone lived with so much hope that they would beat it one more time, or remain in remission. There were many stories of the bravery of those who had not survived. I was in tears, or near tears with each story. I know how fortunate I personally have been. I would only hope I could live with the courage and attitude of these wonderful people. I am not good at asking people to donate to any cause. I know your funds are hard earned and limited. You make conscience decisions how you will use that money. The money I raise will support programs and services for cancer survivors and for those diagnosed with cancer to face the challenges of the disease head on and live life on their own terms. Hopefully I will have the fortitude to stay with this until I at least reach my goal of $10,000. In addition to asking for donations, I will be holding an auction later this spring or early summer with autographed memorabilia from notable sports and other personalities. I'll let you know about that later. In October I will join Russ and his brother Sasha as "Team Band of Brothers" in the 2014 Team LIVESTRONG Austin Challenge. I will ride 45 miles on October 19--pray for me please. Russ and Sasha will ride 100 miles again this year. Please consider a donation to the LIVESTRONG foundation ($45 dollars or whatever you can give will be awesome). I want to thank you in advance for your consideration in supporting cancer victims and those who love them. God bless you.
