Lance Armstrong Foundation Announces Internationally Acclaimed Latina Actress, Singer Lorena Rojas to Serve As LIVESTRONG Global Envoy, In Order to Empower Latino Cancer Survivors

AUSTIN, Tex., August 11, 2009 — The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) announced today Mexican actress and singer Lorena Rojas will serve as a LIVESTRONG Global Envoy whose special area of concentration will be to empower and inspire Latino cancer survivors . Ms. Rojas also will participate in the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit in Dublin, Ireland, August 24 through 26.

Ms. Rojas is one of the 28 million people worldwide currently living with cancer. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and, while facing the biggest challenge of her life, she made a commitment to fight cancer around the world by sharing her experiences with other Latino cancer survivors.

"I am honored to accept this challenging and rewarding assignment. I can't think of any other issue more important to me right now than empowering Latino cancer survivors around the world to fight this disease," said Ms. Rojas.

As an Envoy, Ms. Rojas will represent the fight against cancer at the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit in Dublin, a landmark event of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign aimed at reducing stigma and making cancer a global priority. The Summit will bring together world leaders, corporations, non-governmental organizations and 300 advocates from more than 65 countries to introduce new commitments to cancer control in an unprecedented show of solidarity. Together these stakeholders will demonstrate the urgency of the global cancer epidemic and set a path for reducing its burden.

At the summit, Ms. Rojas will kick off the opening procession of nations participating in the event. She also will participate in a roundtable with key NGOs from Mexico, who have made commitments to create programs to fight cancer, and Dr. Alejandro Mohar-Betancourt, general director of the National Cancer Institute of Mexico.

"We are thrilled Ms. Rojas has joined us in the fight against cancer," said Doug Ulman, President and CEO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. "By 2010, cancer will be the leading cause of death worldwide. Frequently in multicultural populations, many of those diagnosed suffer in silence, afraid of the cultural stigma attached to a cancer diagnosis in their community. The LIVESTRONG Envoy program is changing that perception by inviting public figures, such as Ms. Rojas to become cancer activists. We applaud her passion and her commitment to use her voice and public platform to inspire and rally support for Latinos living with cancer worldwide."
