LIVE STRONG, RIDE STRONG
Lance Armstrong Foundation Prepares for Annual Ride for the Roses Weekend and Celebrates Record Peloton Project Fundraising
AUSTIN, Texas — September 30, 2004 — The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) is gearing up for its 8th annual Ride for the Roses Weekend, a celebration of the fundraising and awareness-building efforts of the 2004 Peloton Project, the LAF’s major grassroots fundraising and outreach program. This year the Peloton Project surpassed its goal and set a new record, raising more than $5 million for the LAF’s mission to help people with cancer live strong.
This year’s Ride Weekend will take place October 15–17, 2004, in Austin, Texas and will attract Peloton Project members, cancer survivors, volunteers, sponsors, donors and proud Live Strong wristband-wearers from all over the world. The John Wayne Cancer Foundation is the presenting sponsor of this year’s Ride Weekend.
Weekend highlights include the PowerBar Health & Sports Expo on Friday and Saturday, featuring cancer screening services, information about cancer awareness, sports gear and apparel, new product demonstrations and food concessions. On Saturday evening, Wells Fargo will present “A Conversation with Lance,” an educational event about living with cancer featuring an interview with Lance by the news anchor of NBC’s “Today Show,” Ann Curry. This year’s Weekend will also include the first ever Live Strong Kids event on Saturday at Auditorium Shores.
The Weekend culminates with Sunday’s big event, the Ride for the Roses, which begins at 8 a.m. at the Travis County Expo and Heritage Center. The Ride features courses that range from six to 100 miles and draws thousands of people from all over the world to ride with Lance through the Austin hill country. Medical support, rest stops, food and drinks — along with camaraderie, cheers and high spirits — will be readily available along the course.
The LAF will celebrate an extraordinary year of fundraising, including the remarkable success of the Wear Yellow Live Strong wristband campaign. In May, the LAF and Nike began efforts to raise $5 million for the LAF through the sale of yellow wristbands engraved with Lance’s mantra, Live Strong. Since then, approximately 15 million bands have been sold, with all proceeds benefiting LAF programs that help people living with cancer. Wristbands are still available for $1 each at www.laf.org.
