LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION AND RAINBOW BABIES PLAN CANCER SURVIVORSHIP CENTER FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
AUSTIN, Texas - August 30, 2004 - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) announced today its partnership with Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital of University Hospitals of Cleveland, to create a survivorship center dedicated to the LAF mission of helping people with cancer live strong. A $100,000 LAF planning grant will help Rainbow establish a center to provide early identification and intervention, advocacy, counsel and education for young cancer survivors, their families, educators and peer groups.
"Young cancer survivors represent a traditionally underserved community. Like all cancer survivors, children and young adults face long-term challenges that should be addressed," said Suzanne Kho, associate director of the research program at the LAF. "The LAF is excited to contribute to the creation of a comprehensive center that will meet their needs."
Rainbow plans to establish a center of support and counseling for cancer survivors from infancy to young adulthood. The program will follow cancer survivors over time to investigate their issues and needs and identify successful interventions. In addition, the center will create a program for newly diagnosed patients to begin treatment with the support of professionals, educators, coaches and survivors.
"Our clinic will address and anticipate cancer survivorship issues and concerns from the time of diagnosis through their journey to adulthood," said Meri Armour, Senior Vice President for Women's Children's Services and the Ireland Cancer Center, University Hospitals of Cleveland. She added, "In partnership with the LAF, we will focus on the specific and unique needs of young people living with cancer."
The LAF offers research grants annually to both established and young investigators who seek to pursue research that is not readily fundable from traditional sources. The LAF has awarded more than $6.4 million in research grants since 1997 and has also supported several survivorship centers. Currently the LAF research program focuses on funding grants for cancer survivorship and testicular cancer research projects.
