LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION HITS THE ROAD FOR THE 2004 TOUR DE FRANCE
Fans and Cancer Survivors Around the World Will Gather and Cheer For Lance

AUSTIN, Texas - July 9, 2004 - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) will join the adventure at the 2004 Tour de France - a three-week road race that takes place in France every July. This year marks the 91st edition of the race.

The LAF's founder and namesake - reigning champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong - will attempt to make history by becoming the first man to win six Tours. The Tour officially began on July 3 in Liège, Belgium. The winner will emerge in Paris on July 25.

"Lance's participation and triumph in the Tour is a symbol of hope to people living with cancer," said LAF President and CEO Mitch Stoller. "Lance proves that life after cancer is all about living strong."

An LAF RV will be on the road and making stops at the start villages and stage ends on the Tour. The RV will be outfitted in yellow and used to distribute information about the LAF and living with cancer. Lance fans are encouraged to come find the RV and show their support.

"We envision it as a meeting place for survivors and fans alike," said Stoller. "It's great to have a presence there, both to cheer on Lance and to raise awareness about our mission."

The Tour de France began in 1903 as a 2,500 km race of six stages and quickly grew in popularity. Today, it is widely considered the most difficult and prestigious of cycling races - a three-week-long grueling epic in 20 stages. Along the way, the Tour's most famous trademark, the Yellow Jersey, worn by the current time leader, was introduced. Lance Armstrong, a seven-year survivor of testicular cancer, has won the Tour the previous five years. Only five men have ever won five Tours; no one has ever won six.
