LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION TO PARTICIPATE IN PEDIATRIC CANCER COLLOQUIUM
Pediatric Oncologists From Across Texas Gather to Discuss Cancer Treatment and Children

AUSTIN, Texas - July 14, 2004 - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) will participate in the inaugural San Antonio Pediatric Cancer Colloquium, hosted by the Children's Cancer Research Institute (CCRI). The Colloquium will bring together leading experts in the state to discuss the diagnosis, treatment, outcomes and patterns of care of Texas children with cancer and will take place June 16-17.

Andy Miller, associate director of public health for the LAF, and Kevin Brady, acting director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will attend and discuss A National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship: Advancing Public Health Strategies, a joint effort to help the public health community effectively and comprehensively address cancer survivorship issues faced by the growing number of cancer survivors living with cancer.

"Children with cancer have very high survival rates, but the long-term effects of cancer treatment are particularly significant for children as they develop," said Miller. "We are looking forward to discussing this topic and collaborating with the best in the field."

The CCRI has invited all pediatric cancer specialists in the state. Other confirmed attendees include representatives from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, Baylor College of Medicine and other Texas programs.

The two-day Colloquium begins at 11 a.m. Friday, July 16, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Topics will include pediatric brain tumors, childhood leukemia, neuroblastoma and epidemiology of childhood cancer.
