LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION AND DANA-FARBER PARTNER FOR ADULTS LIVING WITH CANCER
$1 Million Grant to Establish Lance Armstrong Foundation Adult Survivorship Clinic at Dana-Farber
AUSTIN, Texas - August 30, 2004 - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) announced today a $1 million gift to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to establish the Lance Armstrong Foundation Adult Survivorship Clinic. The clinic will provide comprehensive services for adult survivors and further the LAF mission to help people with cancer live strong.
"The Lance Armstrong Foundation is dedicated to addressing the long-term emotional and physical consequences that accompany a cancer diagnosis and treatment," said Mitch Stoller, president and C.E.O of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. "Our partnership with Dana-Farber ensures that together we will investigate and provide for the needs of adult cancer survivors."
The Lance Armstrong Foundation Adult Survivorship Clinic will offer an array of services, including consultative care in endocrinology, cardiology and neurology. Services will also include related testing and screening, educational and support programs and a variety of psychosocial resources, including counseling and neuropsychiatry services. The clinic, which will be part of the Perini Family Survivors' Center, will also focus it resources on developing a robust research program.
"We have made many significant strides during the past decade in understanding the lifelong impact of cancer and its treatment on pediatric cancer survivors but limited attention has been focused on adult cancer survivors," says Lisa Diller, M.D., director of the Perini Family Survivors' Center. "With the generous gift from the Lance Armstrong Foundation, we can take this same energy to address the many unmet needs of adult cancer survivors."
According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 10 million Americans are living with cancer. This number is projected to grow as research advances lead to a better understanding of cancer and to better, more effective treatments.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation Adult Survivorship Clinic will expand Dana-Farber's David B. Perini, Jr., Quality of Life Clinic. Since its founding in 1993, the David B. Perini, Jr., Quality of Life Clinic has evolved in a nationally recognized model for addressing the lifelong physical and psychosocial challenges faced by a growing population of childhood cancer survivors. The clinic's faculty provides medical follow-up as well as conducts research into the long-term effects of childhood cancer and cancer treatments.
