LANCE ARMSTRONG HONORED BY U.S. HOUSE
Congressman Lloyd Doggett Sponsors Resolution to Honor Lance's 6th Tour de France Win and Efforts for People Living with Cancer
AUSTIN, Texas - September 22, 2004 - The U.S. House of Representatives voted today to honor Lance Armstrong's contributions to cycling and cancer survivorship. House Resolution 761 congratulates Lance Armstrong for his historic victory in the 2004 Tour de France and commends his unwavering commitment to cancer awareness and people battling cancer.
"We are so proud that Lance's extraordinary accomplishments - both his athletic feats and his determination to help people with cancer live strong - have been recognized and applauded," said Mitch Stoller, president and C.E.O. of the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF).
The legislation was introduced on September 9, 2004, by Representative Lloyd Doggett (TX-10) and was co-sponsored by a bi-partisan group of 58 members of the House of Representatives, including Representatives Lamar Smith (TX-21) and John Carter (TX-31) for a total of 14 members from Texas and the entire Central Texas delegation. The resolution notes that Lance is the first cancer survivor to win the Tour de France and states that Lance's "courage and resolution to overcome cancer have made him a role model to cancer patients and their families around the world." The resolution further praises Lance's dedication to helping people living with cancer through the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
"What defines us is not our setbacks, but how we work to overcome them. While his accomplishments on his bike ensure him a place in history, his work as a public health champion have assured him a place in the hearts of many who battle cancer and those who love them," said Representative Doggett. "To meet the challenge, to strive, to succeed, whether in the Tour de France or the fight against cancer, Lance's work shows the power of personal perseverance."
On the floor of the House chamber, Doggett spoke of Lance's determination on the bike and in the fight against cancer and was joined by other members in support of the bill. Doggett also encouraged fellow members to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Comprehensive Cancer Control (CCC) program, which is supported by the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
The CCC program is a coordinated approach to reducing cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality through prevention, early detection, treatment and rehabilitation. According to the CDC, implementation of the CCC approach would help to prevent new cases of cancer, detect cancer early, increase public education and awareness about cancer control, utilize state-of-the-art cancer treatments, provide appropriate rehabilitation and support in cancer survivorship, use limited resources for cancer control more efficiently and reduce the duplication of efforts in cancer control.
LAF staff members and cancer survivor advocates visited Washington, D.C., on June 16 to meet with lawmakers and participate in a Capitol Hill briefing for lawmakers and their staff about advancing cancer survivorship strategies. The briefing presented findings of the LAF and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) joint National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship and the President's Cancer Panel's recent report about cancer survivorship. Participants included officials from the CDC, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the President's Cancer Panel.
