LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION BUILDS A NATIONWIDE COMMUNITY TO HELP PEOPLE LIVING WITH CANCER
The Foundation Awards $1 Million in Grants to Community Organizations

Austin, TX - August 3, 2004 - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) announced today partnerships with 40 different non-profit organizations across the U.S. The LAF is awarding grants totaling more than $1 million as part of its 2004 Community Program. The LAF Community Program helps people living with cancer in their local communities, builds nationwide camaraderie between organizations and promotes cancer survivorship education and programs.

"This year's applicants were outstanding," said Priya Sircar, the public health program manager at the LAF. "We are honored to support these unique and ground-breaking organizations with their mission to help people living with cancer."

Grants were awarded in four specific areas: adolescent/young adult issues, physical activity, survivorship education, and palliative and end-of-life-care. Each non-profit organization chosen in its respective categories completed a rigorous application process. Proposals for their programs were reviewed by a committee of LAF staff members, cancer survivors and survivorship experts and advisors.

This year the LAF awarded multi-year grants in an effort to support the longevity and success of partner organizations. The LAF will also host a conference August 13-15, 2004, for all organizations supported through the Community Program. Sessions will provide delegates with information and tools about topics that include infrastructure development, strategic planning, fundraising and evaluation. Delegates will also engage in relationship building activities during which they will have the opportunity to discuss challenges and exchange best practices.

Since its inception in 2001, the LAF Community Program has awarded more than $2 million grants to various organizations.
