DR. AMELIE G. RAMIREZ JOINS LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
AUSTIN, Texas - June 14, 2005 - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) announced today that Amelie G. Ramirez, Dr.P.H., Professor of Medicine and Deputy Director of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, has joined the LAF's Board of Directors.
A leader in the medical community, Dr. Ramirez was appointed by President Clinton to the National Cancer Institute's National Cancer Advisory Board and by former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health.
"Dr. Ramirez's leadership and expertise is invaluable as the LAF enters our ninth year of helping people with cancer," said Mitch Stoller, president and chief executive officer of the LAF. "Her work in the cancer community provides a critical perspective to supporting the LAF's mission, particularly in reaching Latino/Hispanic cancer survivors and the medically underserved with the physical, emotional and practical tools and information they need to live strong."
As a behavioral science and health communications investigator, Dr. Ramirez brings to the LAF considerable knowledge about the effects of cancer on Latinos/Hispanics. Her research projects have included the issues of breast cancer genetics, cancer risk factors, impact of breast cancer on families, breast cancer survivorship and smoking prevention and cessation.
Dr. Ramirez serves on the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's National Health Advisory Council and chairs the Komen Foundation's Hispanic/Latino Task Force. She also serves as associate director of community research for the San Antonio Cancer Institute.
Her previous leadership roles include serving as a member of the Media and Counter Marketing Panel of the American Legacy Foundation, Board of Directors of the Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco, Physician Oncology Education Program of the Texas Medical Association and the Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition of the Texas Department of Health.
Dr. Ramirez will join fellow board members Lance Armstrong, Dennis Cavner, Mark McKinnon, E. Lee Walker, Michael Sherwin, Dr. Craig Nichols, Jeffery C. Garvey, Joe Aragona, Susan J. Bruno, Hamilton Jordan, Sandy Knapp and Dr. Steven N. Wolff in leading the LAF in its efforts to help people with cancer live strong.
