LIVESTRONG CELEBRATES ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY
AUSTIN, Texas —May 17, 2005 — The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) announced today that more than 47.5 million LIVESTRONG™ wristbands have now been purchased since the initiative was launched last year, May 17, 2004. The Wear Yellow LIVESTRONG campaign, a Nike and LAF partnership, was launched last May in an effort to raise funds for LAF programs that help people with cancer live strong.
Nike created the bright yellow wristband as a tribute to Lance Armstrong and in support of people living with cancer. Nike set a goal to raise at least $5 million for the LAF, mostly through the sale of LIVESTRONG wristbands, and donated an additional $1 million.
LIVESTRONG wristbands represent unity in the battle against cancer and hope for all those who are living with cancer. Wristbands have been sold to citizens of all 50 states, more than 60 countries and on every continent. Since the launch of the campaign, wristbands have been spotted on a number of athletes, Olympians, musicians, actors and political leaders.
Strong demand for the yellow wristbands continues. The LAF currently sells an average of 100,000 wristbands every day at www.laf.org and www.wearyellow.com. Additional authorized dealers of LIVESTRONG wristbands include all Niketown locations, nikewomen stores and Niketown outlets. Discovery Communications also sells wristbands at its nationwide chain of more than 120 Discovery Channel Stores.
Nike is continuing to support the LAF through its new 10//2 Collection, a line of performance and lifestyle footwear and apparel named for the date that Lance was diagnosed with cancer — October 2, 1996. The Collection bears the signature yellow band and the LAF will receive $1.00 for each piece of the 10//2 Collection sold. The 10//2 Collection can be viewed at www.wearyellow.com.
For Lance and many people living with cancer, yellow is the color of hope, courage, inspiration and perseverance. LIVESTRONG wristbands allow everyone to share that spirit — especially the 10 million people living with cancer in the U.S.
The LAF is thrilled about the success of the campaign. Funds raised through wristband sales will benefit the LAF’s advocacy, education, public health and research programs.
