LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION PROVIDES AID TO GULF COAST VICTIMS
LAF Grants Support Displaced Gulf Coast Citizens as Hurricane Katrina Leaves Cancer Patients Devoid of Treatment

AUSTIN, Texas - November 4, 2005 - In an effort to lend a helping hand to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) has awarded a combined total of more than $500,000 to 17 organizations assisting cancer patients whose medical treatments were interrupted by the disaster. The funding ensures that approximately 1,300 cancer patients from the Gulf Coast region will continue to receive appropriate medical care in the aftermath of the natural disaster.

The grants enable organizations to meet the needs of cancer patients and families directly affected by Hurricane Katrina including but not limited to chemotherapy, radiation, medical supplies, transportation, lodging and meal assistance. Organizations receiving LAF grants include:

  • Breckenridge Cancer Care Team, Austin, TX
  • Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge, LA
  • Cancer Therapy & Research Center, San Antonio, TX
  • CancerCare, Inc, New York, NY
  • Candlelighters of Central Arkansas, Little Rock, AR
  • Children's Wish Foundation International, Atlanta, GA
  • Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Foundation, Baton Rouge, LA
  • National Cancer Coalition, Inc., Baton Rouge, LA
  • Patient Advocate Foundation, Newport News, VA
  • Providence Hospital, Mobile, AL
  • University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX
  • Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, Chicago, IL
  • Blount Memorial Foundation, Maryville, TN
  • Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans, New Orleans, LA
  • St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Inc., Memphis, TN
  • The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation, Nashville, TN

Non-profit organizations were asked to submit a proposal requesting up to $50,000 in funding for their cause. Applications were reviewed by the LAF and selected based on budget statements, project descriptions and victim need in the area.
