LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION RECEIVES CANCERCARE'S 2006 BEACON AWARD
Annual Award Honors CancerCare Partner for Support of People Affected by Cancer
AUSTIN, Texas - March 1, 2006 - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) received the 2006 Beacon Award at CancerCare's 23rd annual Human Services Award Dinner yesterday.
Each year, CancerCare recognizes an organization that has had a direct and measurable impact on the services CancerCare provides. LAF president and chief executive officer Mitch Stoller accepted the 2006 Beacon Award on the Foundation's behalf.
"With more than 60 years of providing support to people living with cancer, CancerCare's vision and dedication to quality-of-life issues remain inspiring," Stoller said. "We are humbled to be recognized by an organization of this caliber."
The LAF received the 2006 Beacon Award for its support of CancerCare's research on chemobrain, a common chemotherapy side-effect, as well as CancerCare's popular telephone education workshop series about survivorship. CancerCare also highlighted the Foundation's response to the 2005 hurricane disaster, through which the LAF provided emergency financial assistance to hundreds of displaced CancerCare clients.
In May 2004, the LAF partnered with CancerCare to establish the LIVESTRONG™ SurvivorCare Program to provide education, qualified referrals and confidential counseling services to people facing the everyday challenges of cancer. CancerCare manages the LIVESTRONG SurvivorCare intake center for phone calls and email inquiries sent to the Foundation.
"Together, CancerCare and the LAF have been able to make a difference in communities throughout the country, bringing information and support to those who need it most," Stoller said.
