LANCE ARMSTRONG RECEIVES UICC OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD
Lance Armstrong Foundation Participates in UICC World Cancer Congress
AUSTIN, Texas - July 13, 2006 - Lance Armstrong received the Outstanding Volunteer of the World Award from the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), of which the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) is a member organization, at the biennial UICC World Cancer Congress in Washington, D.C., held July 8-12, 2006.
The Outstanding UICC Volunteer Award recognizes those who have demonstrated excellence in cancer control beyond their discipline and sector. Andy Miller, director of survivorship programs for the LAF, accepted the award on Armstrong's behalf.
At the conference, Miller also presented at a session entitled Cancer Survivorship: An Emerging Role for Public Health in collaboration with presenters from Italy, Switzerland and Canada and joined representatives from the American Cancer Society, National Coalition of Cancer Survivorship and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to give a presentation entitled Moving the National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship Forward: Strategic Thinking and Planning.
In addition, the LAF hosted the closing plenary luncheon session of the CDC Partners Summit, which followed the UICC World Cancer Congress. The session focused on young adult survivorship issues and featured LAF board member and Craig Nichols, M.D., Oregon Health & Science University, and cancer survivors Tamika Felder and C.J. Howard.
The LAF provided UICC and the CDC with funding for global scholarships for public health nurses and practitioners to attend the Congress and to support the closing plenary luncheon session at the CDC Partners Summit.
