LANCE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION AWARDS LIVESTRONG AWARD TO HUSBAND-AND-WIFE TEAM
Birmingham Residents Angie and Jerry Kelly Honored for their Efforts to Support Cancer Survivors

AUSTIN, Texas - November 1, 2006 - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) recently awarded the LIVESTRONG Award to Angie and Jerry Kelly for their efforts to help people affected by cancer through their work with the LAF, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Birmingham Affiliate, the American Cancer Society, Cyclists Combating Cancer and other cancer organizations.

A two-time cancer survivor, Jerry lost his father and both grandfathers to cancer before being diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2000, just four months after he and Angie were married.  Angie was Jerry's primary caregiver and supported him through his own diagnosis, as well as through Jerry's mother's subsequent diagnosis with breast cancer.  Jerry also was diagnosed with melanoma in 2006.

Both active volunteers with the LAF, the Kellys have served as advocates through LIVESTRONG Day and as fundraisers and mentors through Ride for the Roses and the LIVESTRONG Challenge Portland.  Together they have conducted letter-writing campaigns directed at elected officials and media representatives, held meetings with elected officials and participated in hundreds of public speaking engagements as a voice for the LAF and the cancer survivorship movement.

"Angie and Jerry have worked daily since 2001 to promote the LAF through fundraising, awareness and advocacy efforts.  Their commitment to the LAF is a 365-day-a-year volunteer job," said Doug Ulman, chief mission officer of the LAF.  "When asked once how long they would be involved, Angie replied, 'Until there's no more cancer.'  Their compassion, dedication and all-around enthusiasm are contagious, and the LAF is a better organization because we have them on our team."

The LAF presented the Kellys with the LIVESTRONG Award at the close of its LIVESTRONG Summit, held October 27-29, 2006, and designed to organize, inspire and direct the efforts of cancer survivors from across the country to change the face of cancer survivorship. Summit delegates identified challenges, brainstormed possible solutions and developed personal action plans that they will then be responsible for implementing to help people affected by cancer in their own communities.

"Angie and Jerry Kelly have made a significant impact on the world of cancer survivorship, and they set an example for us as we leave the LIVESTRONG Summit and work to effect change around the needs of cancer survivors back home," Ulman said.
