LIVESTRONG® CHALLENGE COMING BACK TO PHILADELPHIA
Lance Armstrong Foundation challenges Philly runners, walkers and cyclists to unite in the fight against cancer
AUSTIN, TX – August 09, 2007 – Later this month, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) is bringing the LIVESTRONG Challenge to Philadelphia for the second straight year. Recognized as the LAF’s signature fundraising event, the LIVESTRONG Challenge garners support for the LAF's mission to inspire and empower people affected by cancer. Challenge participants can choose to walk, run or ride on August 26 while showing their support for the cancer fight. To date, the LAF has contributed more than $2.5 million in Pennsylvania to support programs and research that will help end the needless death and suffering caused by cancer.
“Cancer affects everyone,” said Lance Armstrong, founder and chairman of the LAF. “Every day, 1,500 people lose their lives to cancer and that is simply unacceptable. The Challenge offers individuals an opportunity to stand up and take action in the fight against cancer. I invite you to come make a difference and ride with me in the Challenge.”
LIVESTRONG Challenge participants can choose to bike 10, 40, 70 or 100 miles, or walk/run in the community 5K. The combined walk/run allows individuals of all fitness levels to participate. In addition to walking, running and riding, the LAF encourages members of the community to volunteer and cheer on participants during the event.
"The Challenge is truly a community event bringing participants together from all over the East Coast. We have something for everybody and a way in which everyone can be involved," said Doug Ulman, president of the LAF. "Philly blew us away last year with more than 3,000 participants and volunteers. Their dedication and commitment is inspiring and I look forward to another successful Challenge in 2007.”
Each Challenge participant is required to pay a $50 registration fee. There is an additional $250 fundraising minimum for cyclists, but no further fundraising requirement for walkers and runners, though everyone is encouraged to raise funds. Participants can choose to register individually or with a team. LAF provides support to Challenge participants through mentor programs, online athletic training, fundraising tools and message boards. About the Lance Armstrong Foundation
The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) unites people to fight cancer, believing that unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything. We provide the practical information and tools people battling cancer need to live life on their own terms. We take aim at the gap between what is known and what is done to prevent death and suffering due to cancer. We engage the public at large to pursue an agenda focused on preventing cancer, ensuring access to screening and care, improving the quality of life for people affected by cancer, and investing in needed research. Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF is located in Austin, Texas. UNITE at LIVESTRONG.org. |
