Lance Armstrong Foundation Receives Bipartisan Commitment to Make Fighting Cancer a Priority in '08 Hopefuls Administrations
Cedar Rapids, Iowa - August 28, 2007 — The first-ever LIVESTRONG Presidential Cancer Forum, a two-day event sponsored by the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), came to a successful close today after receiving commitments from Republican presidential candidates Senator Sam Brownback and Governor Mike Huckabee to make fighting cancer a priority in their administrations.
In opening remarks, Senator Brownback and Governor Huckabee reflected on their personal experiences with the disease and its profound impact on their lives and families. Both detailed aggressive plans to fight the disease.
"We created the LIVESTRONG Presidential Cancer Forum to hear how candidates for President plan to fight for survivors and our loved ones against this dreaded disease" said Lance Armstrong, founder and Chairman of LAF. "I am grateful to all the candidates who participated and will make it my mission to keep cancer at the forefront during this presidential campaign."
The LIVESTRONG Presidential Cancer Forum was held August 27 for Democratic presidential candidates and August 28th for Republicans, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The event was moderated by Lance Armstrong and MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews.
Democratic presidential candidates Senator Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Congressman Dennis Kucinich and Governor Bill Richardson and Republican candidates Senator Sam Brownback and Governor Mike Huckabee all participated.
