Lance Armstrong Foundation President and CEO Named Health Care Hero
Doug Ulman honored by the Austin Business Journal for his contribution to improving health care for cancer survivors in Central Texas
AUSTIN, Texas – August 14, 2008 – Doug Ulman, President and CEO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), today received the Austin Business Journal's (ABJ) "Health Care Hero" award in the Public Health category. Health Care Heroes honors individuals, organizations and companies for their contributions to improving health care in Central Texas. Nominees and winners were recognized today at an awards breakfast at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Austin.
The Public Health category honors a person or organization that has developed or improved an initiative to improve the public health of the community. A panel of judges selected Ulman from a pool of more than 45 nominations. The nomination highlighted Ulman's work with the LAF and his personal battle with cancer. Ulman, who has been with the LAF for since February of 2001, is a three-time cancer survivor.
"Doug's very personal approach to cancer advocacy has made the LAF more than just a provider of education, resources and grants," said Lance Armstrong, the founder and chairman of the LAF, in his nomination of Ulman. "With his leadership, it also has become a network of supportive friends. In leading the development of programs that educate people not only about cancer prevention and treatment, but also about often-overlooked survivorship issues, Doug has made a profound difference in the lives of cancer survivors and their loved ones in Central Texas and throughout the United States."
Under Ulman's leadership, the LAF's annual budget has grown from $2 million to nearly $40 million. In 2004, he helped form the Young Adult Alliance, a coalition of organizations with the goal to improve the survival rates and quality of life for young adults with cancer between the ages of 15 and 40.
In 2007, he was a driving force behind the passage of a constitutional amendment to create the Texas Cancer Prevention and Research Institute, which will dedicate $3 billion to improving health and lives throughout Central Texas and across the state. A strong believer that early education is a powerful defense against cancer, last year Ulman also advocated for LIVESTRONG at School, a program established to provide teachers with free lesson plans to teach children about cancer in an age-appropriate, empowering way.
Ulman was instrumental in the creation of the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Notebook, a groundbreaking survivorship resource first published in 2007 that helps cancer survivors, especially those without regular computer access and low-income or uninsured citizens who are denied follow-up care after cancer treatment, and their families organize and guide their cancer experience. Earlier this year, he forged an alliance with the American Library Association to provide Survivorship Notebooks to more than 14,200 U.S. libraries across the United States.
"I'm honored to be recognized by the Austin Business Journal as a 'health care hero,'" said Ulman. "The true heroes, in my opinion, are the people who live with cancer every day and fight the disease with all they've got. They, along with the many Central Texans who have been so supportive of our mission, epitomize what it means to live strong. We look forward to continuing our fight against cancer and one day eradicating this persistent disease."
