Internships
The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) offers non-paid internships to students interested in learning the inner workings of a non-profit organization. Interns work directly with an LAF team member to gain hands on experience in their area of interest.
Requirements
- Applicants should have an interest in learning about the workings of a non-profit organization.
- Applicants must be available to work 10-20 hours per week, Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:30am – 5:30pm, at the LAF offices in Austin, Texas.
- Applicants must be able to provide their own housing and transportation.
- Applicants should have strong verbal and written communication skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, as well as competency with the internet and e-mail.
- Undergraduate and graduate level students are encouraged to apply. Recent graduates are also eligible.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation does not sponsor visas. All foreign students must obtain written permission from their Designated School Official or Responsible Visa Officer at their university stating that they are in valid immigration status.
Internship Area Descriptions
Administration:
- Finance interns will assist the finance and accounting team as they work to maintain the integrity of all financial, accounting, and compliance activities for the foundation. Tasks may include check filing, data entry, and finance related research.
- HR/Volunteer Services interns will collaborate with various departments within the organization to recruit, organize and motivate staff, interns, and volunteers. Tasks may include communicating with job applicants, communicating with current and interested volunteers, and working to enhance our intern program.
- Business Technology interns will assist the technology team as they work to deliver and maintain technology resources that help the LAF. Tasks may include working in our CRM database to manage records, event registration lists, and donation and contact forms. The intern may also assist in updating, managing, and publishing content across the LAF's website.
Development/Fundraising:
- Event planning interns will help the LIVESTRONG™ Challenge team as they organize events to engage our constituents at all levels. Tasks may include interacting with vendors, sponsors, participants, volunteers and other organizations that work with LAF to help produce highly successful events in multiple cities.
- Fundraising interns will assist with a variety of grassroots fundraising events, including the LAF marathon program and donor events. Tasks include assisting with constituent communication and fulfilling requests from fundraisers. Learn more about grassroots fundraising.
- Constituent and Donor Relations interns will help the CR team as they work to enhance internal communications and customer service for constituents. Tasks include compiling and responding to constituent and donor requests through e-mail, telephone, and handwritten notes. This position involves cross-team communication at all levels of the organization.
Marketing/Communications:
- Marketing interns will help the team in their efforts to build brand awareness and relevance, drive utilization to the LAF's survivorship services, capture/activate constituents and support the LAF's fundraising activities. Tasks may include responding to e-mail and letter inquiries, assisting with the creation of press releases and marketing pieces, and communicating with LAF partners.
- Web Marketing intern will help the marketing team in their efforts to complete online projects and assist with the LAF's social networking efforts. Tasks will include writing HTML for the LAF website, creating web graphics, and carrying out any other web related requests.
- Media Relations interns will assist with projects involving constituent communications, writing and distributing press releases, media relations surrounding special events, compiling press kits, and various other PR tasks.
- Graphic Design interns will assist with the development and design of core LAF graphics, collateral, and event materials along with helping to design/develop collateral updates. Interns will be able to attend project meeting and press checks. Interns must be proficient in basic design programs (Adobe Creative Suite, Quark Xpress). Writing and proofing skills are also required.
Cancer Survivorship Programs:
- Advocacy interns will help the LAF as we work to make cancer a national priority through grassroots advocacy and public policy initiatives. Tasks may include researching grassroots advocacy practices, communicating with advocates, preparing analysis reports on grassroots strategies, and helping coordinate advocacy outreach communications. - Government Relations interns will assist the LAF in working with elected officials within the cancer community as they work to support legislation that has the potential to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. Tasks include: corresponding with elected officials and organizations/members of the cancer community, tracking national bills of interest through the legislative process, and aiding in the organization of cancer policy meetings and LAF advocacy events.
- Grants interns will aid in the distribution of research grants to investigators studying cancer survivorship issues, and community program grants to organizations offering direct services to cancer survivors. Tasks will include working with grant reviewers, helping to organize and coordinate grant review cycle activities, communicating with grantees, and assisting with programmatic evaluation.
- Public Health/Education interns will help the Programs team as they work to empower the cancer community to address the unmet needs of cancer survivors. Interns may work in areas such as educational material development and dissemination, program evaluation, or the Young Adult Alliance. Tasks may include research, communication with partners, event planning, and coordination with peer reviewers and experts.
- Health Policy intern will work with the Director of Health Policy as we work to develop and convey LAF positions and statements regarding cancer policies. Tasks will include reviewing federal and state legislature for healthcare implications, consolidating and communicating LAF policy positions, and assisting the director in reviewing biomedical interventions and implications for cancer research and clinical care.
- Planning and Evaluation interns will help to measure the impact of LAF initiatives. Tasks will include data collection, research, and evaluating programmatic initiatives. Interns will also have the opportunity to analyze data and report internally and externally on the outcomes of LAF initiatives including cancer support information and services, grant funded programs, and/or public health and health policy initiatives. Planning and Evaluation Interns also have the opportunity to lead projects and to direct research to explore ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
