InternshipsThe Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) offers non-paid internships to students interested in gaining experience in a non-profit setting. Interns work directly with an LAF employee in the following areas of the organization: Administration/Volunteer Services RequirementsApplicants should have an interest in learning about the workings of a non-profit organization.Applicants must be available to work 10-20 hours per week at the LAF offices in Austin, Texas. Applicants must be able to provide their own housing and transportation. Applicants should have strong verbal and written communication skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, as well as competency with the internet and e-mail. Internship Area DescriptionsAdministration/Volunteer Services areas:Finance interns will assist the finance and accounting team as they work to maintain the integrity of all financial, accounting, and compliance activities for the foundation. Tasks may include check filing, data entry, and finance related research. Human Resources interns will help the HR team as they work to provide operational and administrative support for LAF employees through HR processes in the areas of workforce planning, benefits and HR development. Tasks may include organizing and communicating with job applicants, planning staff events and using cost analysis and evaluation skills to perform assessments of current office systems. Volunteer Services interns will assist the volunteer department as they work to collaborate with various departments within the organization to recruit, organize and motivate volunteers who are interested in supporting our cause. Tasks may include communicating with current and interested volunteers from the community, assisting with volunteer organization for events, researching and contacting potential volunteer sponsors. Business Technology interns will assist the technology team as they work to deliver and maintaining technology resources that help the LAF. Tasks may include working in our constituent relations management database to manage records, event registration lists, donation and contact forms. The intern may also assist in updating, managing, and publishing content across the LAF's website. Development/ Fundraising areas:Event planning interns will help the events team as they organize events that benefit the LAF and allow participation with our constituents. Tasks may include interacting with vendors, sponsors, volunteers and other organizations that work with LAF to help produce highly successful events such as the regional LIVESTRONG Challenge events. Learn more about LAF events. Fundraising interns will help the fundraising team as they work with grassroots fundraising efforts, donor alliances, marathon fundraising, and donor events. Tasks may include assisting with constituent communication and fulfilling requests from fundraisers. The intern may also work with team members to gather information that could be of use to fundraisers. Learn more about grassroots fundraising. Merchandise and Donor Relations interns will help the merchandise team with all aspects of merchandise management. Tasks may include compiling and responding to customer requests and merchandise proposals, monthly reconciliation of LAF inventory, general organization with orders and merchandise for the LIVESTRONG Challenge, filing and copying. Marketing/Communications areas:Marketing interns will help the team in their efforts to build brand awareness and relevance, drive utilization to the LAF's survivorship services, capture/activate constituents and support the LAF's fundraising activities. Tasks may include responding to e-mail and letter inquiries,, assisting with the creation of press releases, communicating with LAF partners and assisting with the development of marketing pieces. Media Relations interns will also assist with projects involving constituent communications, writing and distributing press releases, media relations regarding special events, compiling press kits and various other public relations related tasks. Graphic Design interns will assist with the development and design of core LAF graphics, collateral, and event materials along with helping to design/develop core collateral updates. Interns will be able to attend project meeting and press checks. Interns must be proficient in basic design programs (Adobe Creative Suite, Quark Xpress). Writing/proofing skills are also required. Cancer Survivorship Program areas:Advocacy interns will help the advocacy program as they work to make cancer a national priority through grassroots advocacy and public policy initiatives. Tasks may include researching grassroots advocacy practices, communicating with advocates, preparing analysis reports on grassroots strategies, helping coordinate advocacy outreach communications and coordinating grassroots advocacy data. Grants interns will help the grants team as they work to distribute research grants to investigators studying cancer survivorship issues, community grants to community organizations offering direct services to survivors, and survivorship center grants to organizations that are part of the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Centers of Excellence Network. Tasks will include working with grant reviewers, helping to organize and coordinate grant review cycle activities, communicating with grantees, and assisting with programmatic evaluation. Public Health/Education interns will help the public health team as they work to empower the cancer community to address the unmet needs of cancer survivors. Interns may work in areas such as educational material development and dissemination, program evaluation, or the young adult alliance. Task may include research, communication with partners, event planning, coordination with peer reviewers and experts, and coordination with marketing and volunteer departments. Planning and Evaluation interns will help to measure the impact of LAF initiatives for people affected by cancer. Tasks will include collecting data, conducting research, and evaluating programmatic initiatives, . Interns will also have the opportunity to analyze data and report internally and externally on the outcomes of LAF initiatives including cancer support information and services, grant funded programs, and/or public health and health policy initiatives. Planning and Evaluation Interns also have the opportunity to lead projects and to direct research to explore ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. |
