LIVESTRONG Day Local Event Ideas

Below are several ideas for LIVESTRONG Day events and activities to implement in your local community on Tuesday, May 13, to help make cancer a national priority.

  1. Wear yellow on LIVESTRONG Day and encourage your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to do the same. Official LIVESTRONG clothing and merchandise can be purchased online at www.store-laf.org. Proceeds from the LIVESTRONG Store benefit the LAF.
  2. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper about the issues cancer survivors face and the need to make cancer a national priority.
  3. Ask people to stand with Lance and sign a petition to help make cancer a national priority.  (Additional materials will be provided to incorporate this activity into your event.)
  4. Gather a group and deliver LIVESTRONG wristbands to elected officials in your local community and educate them about cancer survivorship issues.
  5. Hold a candlelight vigil in honor of cancer survivors in your local community.
  6. Have a local priest, minister or rabbi hold a survivorship spiritual ceremony at a local place of worship.
  7. Organize a group to volunteer at your local cancer hospital/clinic or other cancer-related organization.
  8. Hold a cancer survivorship rally at a local park, your state capitol or other municipal building.

LIVESTRONG at School- Getting Students Involved

If you are interested in working with students on LIVESTRONG day, encourage schools and teachers you know to enter our LIVESTRONG at SCHOOL contest.

Children in classrooms all over the country are dealing with cancer right now, whether with a grandparent, parent, family member, friend or teacher.

To promote cancer awareness, the Lance Armstrong Foundation challenges classrooms to complete a lesson from the LIVESTRONG at School curriculum and answer the question, "What does LIVESTRONG mean to you?" Participating classes will have the opportunity to enter the LIVESTRONG at School contest to win a visit from champion cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong to their school.

The class that submits the winning entry will receive a visit from Lance Armstrong. Second prize is Nike gear from the LIVESTRONG Collection for your class, and third prize is a LIVESTRONG at School poster signed by Lance for the classroom and LIVESTRONG wristbands for the entire school.

Every class that registers will receive a poster and wristbands to distribute on LIVESTRONG day.

Entry submission deadline is May 1 and winners will be announced on May 13, LIVESTRONG day. To enter the contest or to access the LIVESTRONG at School curriculum, visit www.livestrong.org/school.
