Our Home

The LAF moved to our new home in February 2009 for several reasons. Most notably our move:

  • Creates a permanent home for the Foundation in Austin, Texas
  • Contributes to the revitalization of one of Austin's most diverse neighborhoods and continues our efforts to be a strong community partner
  • Creates space that will be available to host meetings for other nonprofit organizations in Austin
  • Shows the LAF's concern for the environment by focusing on ways to be environmentally friendly, including being designated as one of Austin's first gold-certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) facilities
  • Provides the LAF more stability and long-term fiscal health by owning rather than renting office space

Is there a direct service facility within the new building?

The new building is located in East Austin, an underserved community in the process of revitalization. The location reinforces the LAF's mission to inspire and empower people affected by cancer, an especially important commitment in communities that traditionally have not had access to healthcare resources, information and services.

The LIVESTRONG Patient Navigation Center (PNC) will service people with cancer or at risk for cancer, with an emphasis on underserved populations in the Austin area. The PNC will work to improve access to all available support systems ranging from information and education to financial assistance and family support.

The PNC will not provide patient care, but will establish relationships with Austin-area physicians, hospitals, clinics and organization that provide cancer education, prevention, screening, treatment and support services to help people navigate access to those services based on their individual needs.

The PNC is projected to open to the public in January 2010, but people in immediate need of cancer support services can call LIVESTRONG SurvivorCare for help. LIVESTRONG SurvivorCare is a free, one-on-one support program though which cancer survivors can get professional counseling and referrals to local resources, address financial, insurance and employment issues and connect to new treatments in development.

Who designed the new building?

The architects for the project were Lake Flato and the Bommarito Group, both award-winning and nationally recognized firms.

Is the building environmentally friendly?

The LAF Headquarters received a Gold Rating by the National LEED program as well as a four-star rating by the Austin Energy Green Building Program.

Some "green" features of our new home include:

  • Providing incentives to encourage employees to carpool, ride bikes to work and use mass transit
  • Maximizing use of exterior space for vegetation, using native plants and an efficient water system that will keep water consumption up to 50 percent below average
  • Low-flow faucets and toilets to reduce water usage by 30 percent
  • Taking extra precautions to ensure adequate storm water management and quality control to capture and use 90 percent of the average annual rainfall on-site
  • A glass and steel roof that maximizes natural light and minimizes energy use
  • Taking advantage of green power options with Austin Energy to buy energy from environmentally friendly and efficient sources, accounting for 50 percent of the building's non-renewable energy needs
  • Reused 95 percent of the building waste during remodeling to minimize impact on local landfills

Many of the "green" measures we have put into place in the new building provide significant savings that impact operating costs. For example, the skylights, efficient lighting and mechanical systems in our new building will use 30 percent less energy than a conventional office building, thus decreasing our energy costs. In addition, the building features video conferencing technology to allow staff to collaborate with other organizations without incurring travel costs.

These efficient, cost-saving efforts enable us to direct more funds to programmatic activities that positively impact the lives of cancer survivors.

Who paid for the new building? Did my donations to the LAF go to the new building?

A portion of the costs have been offset by generous donations that were earmarked for this project. We continue to raise funds for the LAF headquarters; opportunities still exist to support the new building financially with major gifts benefitting the patient navigation center, entry plaza, meditation pond, multi-purpose room and others.
