YMCA Program DescriptionsLIVESTRONG at the YMCA: A 12 week small group program designed for adult cancer survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. Our goal is to help cancer survivors build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self-esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical activity program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle as a way of life. Certified staff trained by Stanford University and the YMCA give personal individualized instruction to the participants. The instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post-rehab exercise, nutrition and supportive cancer care. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: A 12-week small group program designed for adult cancer survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. Our goal is to help patients build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Cancer Fitness Fundamentals—this unique program allows for two options: meeting at the downtown YMCA or in the comfort of your own home (mobile). With the help of a Cancer Trainer Specialist, participants are given the tools and guidance to help them begin or continue their journey of health. Meeting one-on-one allows this program to be tailored to fit the specific type of cancer and/or individual needs. Downtown YMCA—meets one-on-one at the downtown YMCA with a specialist as many times as the participant needs. Mobile—created for those individuals who are not ready or comfortable to exercise outside of their home. A YMCA specialist comes to the participant's home for an initial visit and then checks in weekly via email or phone to check on progress and answer any questions. Yoga for Cancer Survivors, Patients and Caregivers—For those seeking to heal the body, this is a gentle yoga class designed to support those who are living through and beyond cancer. Thursday, 5 p.m. Fresh Start Aquatics Class—a low-impact aquatic class designed to be a gradual approach to resuming a physical activity routine. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: A 12 week program which focuses on strength, flexibility, cardiovascular and relaxation techniques. This class welcomes survivors of all types of cancer, from the point of diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: An 8 week session of the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA programs are free to cancer survivors, including membership. After completion of the 8 week class, participants are then invited to join our YMCA community as members. All of our membership fees are based on income on a sliding scale. Financial assistance can also be requested through Strong Kids Financial Assistance programs as appropriate. Burlington County offers two LIVESTRONG at the YMCA classes: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: After Cancer is being offered at our Mt. Laurel facility in Mt. Laurel, NJ at two different times. One class is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m—2 p.m. while the other class is being held from 6:30 p.m.—7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays. This class is modeled after the University of Pennsylvania research study published in the New England Journal of Medicine and feature in the news recently. It is a small group class that will teach you how to strengthen your muscles, stretch effectively and exercise safely. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: In the Water is being offered at our Riverfront facility in Burlington, NJ on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15 a.m. to noon. This class is ideal for people with weakness, muscle or joint impairment as it uses the water buoyancy for support and water resistance to increase strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Swimming skills are not required for this class and participans may bring an aide if needed. Lowe's Branch: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: An 8-week program that includes an exercise routine, a support group, an initial consultation and post-program testing. The program meets three times per week – twice for exercise and once for support. The program is free to participants. All training facilities, equipment and certified instructors are provided by the Lowe's YMCA. Participants will meet Mondays for 45 minutes of cardiovascular exercise, Wednesdays for 45 minutes of stress and relaxation and Fridays for 60 minutes of goal setting at discussion. Dowd Branch: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: An 8-week program consisting of cardiovascular, strengthening and relaxation activities. Participants meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30–11 a.m. for cardiovascular exercise, which is performed on various machines—treadmills, recumbent bicycles, rowers and elliptical machines. Participants use the cardiovascular machine independently ,but are encouraged to accumulate a total of 30 minutes. Strengthening exercises began in the fifth week of the eight-week session and are performed as a group with therabands after the cardiovascular exercise. They perform a variety of strength exercises working through the major muscle groups and then stretch as a group to end each workout. The relaxation class meets on Fridays at 1 p.m. for gentle yoga and breathing. Blumenthal Cancer Center has collaborated with Carolinas HealthCare System Sports Medicine and the Dowd YMCA to develop a cancer wellness program. Carolinas Cancer Wellness Program, which is funded by "24 Hours of Booty", is located on the 6th floor of the Dowd YMCA. The cancer wellness program is an 8-week program designed to assist in managing the physical side effects of cancer treatment for survivors during treatment or during recovery phases. Participants will receive an individualized exercise program consisting of cardiovascular, strength training and flexibility exercises, offering a comprehensive approach to recover and increased physical stamina. Each participant will work with a registered nurse and a trained exercise physiologist during their individualized program. There is no cost for patients to take part in the program thanks to the generous support of 24 Hours of Booty. Lake Highlands Branch: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Wellness Enhancement Program: This is a 12 week one-on-one program designed for adult cancer survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. The goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscular strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and ultimately improve their quality of life. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes, and improving energy levels and self esteem. Visit Lake Highland's LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program online Town North Family Branch: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA This branch offers a one-hour program that meets once a week. If the demand increases after the first month, it will be increased to twice a week. The class begins with a 30-minute walk and talk around our quarter-mile track. The second 30 minutes encompass flexibility and relaxation techniques designed to release tensions and clear minds. The second half of the program is held in a quiet, controlled environment on soft mats in a dimly lit aerobics room. Monthly Cancer Series workshops and seminars are not only very informative but also provide survivors a forum to interact in a group setting. Each workshop and seminar is led by experts who specialize in stress management, self massage and many other topics that may help survivors with their individual needs. In addition, a separate monthly nutritional seminar, taught by a Nutritional and Health Consultant, focuses on special topics as it relates to leading a healthy "rest of your life." LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA candidates are referred by their physicians and first scheduled for an orientation. This includes a tour of the facility, introduction to staff and explanation of the program. We show them the DVD of the Manifesto so that our participants feel connected to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and understand the mission of the program. Participants are then scheduled for an assessment by medical or fitness professionals and a program is designed to meet each participant’s specific needs. Programs can include any of the following: strength and conditioning exercises, cardiovascular activities, balance and stabilization, stretching, and functional training. We design their weekly workouts to include land and/or water-based exercises. Participants are trained and supervised by physical therapists and medical program instructors. Individuals have the choice to do their workouts on their own at any time or during a time when other LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participants are working out. The group class times are being held on MWF from 11:00-12:00 pm. The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program is free for 12 weeks and followed up with a re-assessment of their physical and subjective progress. Participants at this time can choose to continue in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program as members of the YMCA. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: The program is a 12 week small group program designed for adult cancer survivors who are looking to reduce the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self-esteem. Participants come twice a week for 75 minutes where they work with group instructors that are certified to guide them through a program consisting of cardiovascular exercise, weight lifting, stretching, and meditation. Certified fitness instructors trained by Stanford University give personal individualized instruction to the participants. The instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post-rehab exercise, nutrition and supportive cancer care. The class meets on Monday and Wednesday nights at 6:00 pm The Fairfield Family YMCA also offers two types of water based classes designed to help with range of motion, muscle toning, flexibility, and relaxation. The first class is Ai Chi, which combines beautiful, flowing, graceful movements of Tai Chi and a warm water pool which is designed to reduce stress and tone muscles. Second of our water classes is a deep water aerobics class that is designed to give you all of the above mentioned benefits, plus the gentle massaging action of being in deep water. LIVESTRONG at YMCA: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12 week exercise program for adult cancer survivors (men and women) who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their disease and/or treatment. In the individual program the survivors are able to meet one-on-one with qualified staff to develop a program to improve their muscular strength, flexibility, and endurance. The program will be designed around the participant’s schedule, and comfort level in ongoing programs. Participants will receive a 12 week membership and guidance throughout that program period. The group program offers survivors the chance to participate in a 12 week strength training program. This program meets twice a week and consists a cardio warm up followed by a strength training workout. At the end of class there will be a relaxation aspect that may incorporate stretching, meditation, or even a guest speaker about issues that may affect cancer patients and survivors. By participating in the group program the survivors are able to meet with fellow cancer survivors as an extra means of support. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: The Metuchen Branch YMCA is excited to offer a free 12 week membership to cancer survivors who are looking for a gradual approach to exercise to build endurance and strength. For the first six weeks, participants attend a small group program specially designed for cancer survivors beginning with a ½ hour support-based session followed by a one hour aquatics program in our warm, shallow Finne Pool. Participants will then schedule an orientation with a trained fitness person to our Wellness Center. Participants are then free to use the Circuit Room, attend fitness classes and/or work out in the Wellness Center at any time and track their progress for the remaining weeks in the pursuit of long-term health and well-being. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: A Cancer Survivorship Program of Stanford University. This program is a 12-week, twice-a-week strength conditioning program for men and women with any type of cancer. Class size is limited to 12 participants with 2 trainers. The participants work out in a fitness center for about 1 hour on the cardio and strength equipment and then go to a “quiet” room for the 15 minute relaxation/stretching component. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is offered free of charge for all participants…Y members and non-members as well…and they all receive a free 12-week membership to the Y where they participate. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Graduate Club: This Club is an opportunity for graduates of the 12-week LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program to continue working out with their fellow graduates at the same time as the current classes. Graduate Club members mentor the new class members and partake in the relaxation segment at the end of class. The Club is open to those who join the Y upon completion of the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. Starting Over: Starting Over is a range of motion/flexibility exercise program for women with breast cancer. It was developed by Judy Cerrito as a result of her own experience with breast cancer and is now offered at 4 of Greater Providence Y’s branches. The class is held once a week for 7 or 8 week sessions, according to the Y’s schedule. Participants may take the class for one session or for many sessions. In fact some of our participants have taken the program several years, not only for the exercise benefits but for the “supportive” nature of the group. SOS…Survivors Offering Support: SOS is a survivor mentoring program, coordinated by LIVESTRONG at the YMCA staff. We connect folks with particular types of cancer to talk about their specific issues. Meetings occur on the phone or in a public place. Horticultural Therapy: This monthly program is offered free of charge (thanks to a Pepsi grant) to all affected by cancer…survivors, caregivers, family, and friends. A certified horticultural therapist, who is a cancer survivor herself, leads these wonderful 1 ½ hour programs with topics such as: “Twists & Turns”, “Tea for Me”, “Thanks a Lot”, and “Winter Wonderland”. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: Wellness Program in Rochester, NY, is a small group program designed for adult cancer survivors dealing with the aftereffects of cancer treatment. The 12-week program utilizes a private, non-intimidating circuit style that helps participants build strength, increase flexibility and endurance and ultimately improve quality of life. Additional goals include reducing the side effects of treatment, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self-esteem. The program consists of one 12-week session. The program is provided without cost to participants. The YMCA provides trained instructors, the facility and the equipment. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: Exercise and Thrive Program During this 10-week program, with two meetings each week, each participant and their family will receive a free 10-week membership to the YMCA of Greater Seattle, including access to all 11 locations. After the program is completed, participants and their families will be offered the opportunity to join the YMCA of Greater Seattle without paying the joining-fee. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: The program revolves around a caring and encouraging team of staff members who are interested in listening and helping in an individualized way. Our focus is on overall wellness. We provide personalized consultations to assess goals, interests and limitations, and offer a variety of exercise options to help with the development of endurance, strength and flexibility. We also enjoy social gathering and a monthly coffee hour. There are two key programs specifically developed for community Cancer Survivors. Basic Strength & Flexibility is a twelve-week progressive course that meets twice weekly. BSF was created specifically for individuals involved in, or recovering from, cancer treatment. Each twelve-week session is limited to five participants. Anyone affected by cancer is encouraged to join. Cardio, Strength & Stretching for Survivors is an ongoing group exercise class designed for anyone affected by cancer. CSS for Survivors is a 60-minute class that encompasses low-impact cardio, light weight training and mat exercises for balance, coordination, and stretching. The format of the class is encouraging and non-competitive which allows us as a group to try new things. This past year we have tried both yoga and Pilates, and have cycling on the schedule next. The small group is comprised of 5 to 10 participants with registration open every month. If the LIVESTRONG Team class doesn't fit into your schedule, cancer survivors can sign up for one-on-one training with a LIVESTRONG coach. Tampa's LIVESTRONG program also includes approved group exercise classes taught by trained staff to address the special needs of survivors. Classes include: Water Aerobics, Indoor Cycling, Yoga and Stretch Classes. Certified staff trained by Stanford University and the YMCA give personal individualized instruction to the participants.
