The Creative Center at University Settlement, Artist Workshop, Outpatient Art Program

Since 1994, The Creative Center at University Settlement has offered free-of-charge workshops in the arts (visual, performing and literary) to cancer survivors (at any stage—from newly diagnosed to many years post-treatment) and their caregivers as a way to discover their own creative resources as they navigate the “cancer journey”—from diagnosis through survivorship. Selected as a “best practice” model by the National Endowment for the Arts, The Creative Center’s Arts Workshops provide both the technical and aesthetic skills required to explore artistic expression as a means of healing and support in an outpatient setting.

Through our 2013 LIVESTRONG Community Impact Project, we funded the replication of the Artist Workshop program in 15 new communities across the United States offering people living with cancer the opportunity to connect with others through the arts which can reduce anxiety, allay fears, combat isolation and boredom—and most importantly, helping people who are often viewed as representatives of their disease, rather than the unique individuals they are.

As one recent program participant stated: I don’t think about cancer when I’m creating...I enjoy being alive and what I can do and be.”

The Creative Center will work collaboratively with the 2013 grantees to establish a series of workshops (visual, performing and literary) through collaborations with local art resources and a dedicated Artist-In-Residence who will supervise and implement the program including the hiring of instructors, purchase of supplies, and outreach to hospitals. Workshops will be held for 12 hours per month at the following locations:
